Sump pump repair

Your sump pump works to remove all the water that accumulates in your sump basin, which is usually located beneath your basement. Sump pump malfunctions are the leading cause of basement flooding, which is a very unfortunate – not to mention costly!

WHAT CAUSES SUMP PUMP FAILURE?

There are a number of things that can lead to the failure of your sump pump. Knowing the most common causes will help you know when to call.

The most common reasons why sump pumps fail are:

  • The sump pump isn’t the right size for the home’s needs.

  • The sump pump that wasn’t installed properly in the first place.

  • Problems with the switch. This can happen when your sump pump moves from its place inside the basin, making the float unable to do its job.

  • A lack of regular maintenance. Most manufacturers recommend running your sump pump every two to three months. Regular maintenance helps you spot small problems before they become big.

TEST YOUR SUMP PUMP REGULARLY

Test your sump pump regularly to make sure it will operate when the next big rainfall occurs. Test it by pouring a bucket of water into the sump pit. The pump should turn on, remove the water from the pit and shut itself off in a matter of seconds. Ensure that the float and the check valve move freely.

MAINTENANCE AND CLEANING

Regular maintenance is important to ensure that your sump pump operates as it is intended. Typically, a sump pump should be inspected and cleaned annually, but pumps that run frequently due to a higher water table or wet weather conditions should be serviced more often. Like any equipment with moving parts, sump pumps will wear out over time and will need to be replaced. There is no general rule on how often a sump pump should be replaced since it depends on how often the pump operates. To clean your sump pit, remove any dirt, sand, gravel and other debris to increase the pump’s efficiency and prolong its life. Ensure that the discharge line opening is free of obstructions so that water can be pumped through the line and out of your basement or crawlspace.

CONSIDER A BATTERY BACK UP SYSTEM

If your home experiences a power outage out for an extended period, frequent power outages or if your primary sump pump fails. A battery backup sump pump will protect your basement from water damage.
