Summer Storm Prep: A Plumbing Checklist for Minnesota Homeowners

Summer in Minnesota brings sunshine, backyard barbecues, and trips to the lake. It also brings thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and the potential for water damage around your home. While most homeowners focus on clearing branches and securing outdoor furniture before a storm, it's just as important to think about your plumbing system. A little preparation can help prevent flooded basements, sewer backups, and costly water damage when heavy rain rolls through.

Use this simple plumbing storm-prep checklist to help protect your home this summer.

✔️ Test Your Sump Pump

Your sump pump is one of the most important defenses against basement flooding. If it isn't working properly when heavy rain arrives, you could end up with water where you least want it.

To test your sump pump:

  • Pour a bucket of water into the sump pit.

  • Make sure the float rises and activates the pump.

  • Confirm the water is discharged properly outside your home.

  • Listen for unusual noises or signs of wear.

If your sump pump is older or showing signs of trouble, now is the time to have it inspected.

✔️ Check Your Discharge Line

A sump pump is only effective if the discharge line can carry water away from your home.

Make sure:

  • The discharge pipe is clear of debris.

  • Water is directed away from your foundation.

  • There are no cracks, clogs, or obstructions.

Even a properly functioning sump pump can't protect your basement if the water has nowhere to go.

✔️ Inspect Floor Drains

Floor drains help remove excess water and provide protection if minor flooding occurs. Check that drains are clear and draining properly.

If you notice slow drainage, unpleasant odors, or standing water near floor drains, it may be time for a professional inspection.

✔️ Watch for Sewer Backup Warning Signs

Heavy rain can place additional strain on municipal sewer systems and private sewer lines.

Warning signs may include:

  • Slow drains throughout the home

  • Gurgling toilets

  • Water backing up into tubs or floor drains

  • Sewage odors

Addressing these issues before storm season can help prevent much bigger problems later.

✔️ Clear Gutters and Downspouts

While not technically plumbing, gutters and downspouts play a major role in managing water around your home.

Clogged gutters can cause water to overflow near your foundation, increasing the risk of basement leaks and water intrusion. Make sure gutters are clear and downspouts direct water away from your home.

✔️ Know Where Your Main Water Shutoff Is

In any plumbing emergency, knowing how to quickly shut off your home's water supply can minimize damage.

Take a few minutes to locate your main water shutoff valve and make sure everyone in the household knows where it is and how to use it.

✔️ Consider a Backup Plan

Power outages often accompany severe summer storms. If your home relies on a sump pump, a battery backup system can provide extra protection if electricity is lost during heavy rainfall.

A backup system can be especially valuable for homes with finished basements or a history of water issues.
